Victor Osimhen of Nigeria is questionable for the AFCON semifinal
Without their famous striker Victor Osimhen, Nigeria travelled to Bouake in the Ivory Coast on Monday in preparation for their Africa Cup of Nations semifinal encounter against South Africa on Wednesday.
Just before they left on Monday night, the team released a statement stating that the forward was suffering from an intestinal ailment and would be staying in Abidjan until his condition improved.
“Victor Osimhen will not be joining us on this trip due to stomach discomfort,” the message reads. He has been put under strict observation, according to team physicians, and one of the medical team members is remaining behind in Abidjan with him.
He will reunite with the squad before 5 p.m. if cleared by this Tuesday morning.
The reason of the abdominal pain is unknown, but the striker appeared jaded when he was substituted late in the quarterfinal victory over Angola.
Nigeria would suffer a severe hit if they lost the current African Player of the Year, since their assault has been built around the striker’s aggressiveness and quick movements. Four of Nigeria’s six goals in the tournament thus far have come from Osimhen, who also scored the game’s only goal in their opening 1-1 tie with Equatorial Guinea and also scored in some other important matches.
If he is unable to make it on time for the game, coach peseiro has options of Leicester city’s Kelechi Ihenacho, Trabzonspor’s Paul Onuachu, and Terem Moffi’s of OGC Nice.
Paul Onuachu has been the only substitute for Victor Osimhen so far in this tournament while Ihenacho and Moffi are yet to get a single minute.
