Fubara to Swear in 23 New Rivers LG Chairmen Today
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is set to swear in the newly elected council chairmen of the 23 local government areas today, at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt. This comes a day after the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted elections at the grassroots level.
The Action People’s Party (APP) emerged victorious, winning 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the oil-rich state. However, the declaration of results for Etche Local Government Area (LGA) was suspended due to ongoing collation.
In a surprising twist, RSIEC declared Uzodinma Nwafor of the Action Alliance (AA) as the winner of the election in Etche Local Government Area, a day after the polls. RSIEC Chairman, Adolphus Enebeli, described the election as free, fair, and credible, despite initial tensions.
Enebeli commended the patriotism of residents who turned out to vote, with polls closing at 3 pm. The election was observed by members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), chairmen of state independent electoral bodies, and Nigerian Bar Association members.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to proceed immediately after the RSIEC issues certificates of return to the newly elected local government chairmen today in Port Harcourt.
